Barbara MarcinkowskaPainting

Since childhood, I have been fascinated by music and painting.

I have created numerous paintings dedicated to music, trying to express with colour the rhythm, atmosphere, essence, and elements I felt in the works. It is extremely interesting to interpret the pieces I have played on the cello through colour! I don’t paint while “listening” to music in the background; I listen and try to feel the work in order to express it with colours. For many years, I have been fascinated by the encounter of different art forms, their interpenetration, their coexistence.

The evidence of this exploration lies in my studies at the Sorbonne in the Faculty of Aesthetics Plastic and Music Arts, my participation in the Rencontres Artistiques Européennes festival – a festival of multiple arts – and finally, my “Music and Painting” exhibitions. I have created many paintings and canvases dedicated to music in order to express their correspondences.

I studied painting at the American Academy in Paris and drawing for four years at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. I furthered my studies with Parisian painters: Haspa, Agnès Monteilhet, Christophe Kawalko, Maryline Genest, and Laurent Cattaneo of La Grande Chaumière.

“I was born into a family of musicians; my parents and my brother, wonderful musicians and artists, awakened my passion for music and art.” From a very young age, I began giving many concerts, but it was in Paris that I was truly able to express myself in the fields of music and painting. In Paris, I also met many brilliant painters who played a significant role in my artistic development. I would mention, for example, Ardon, who was a student of Kandinsky and Klee at the Bauhaus, and Raphaël Matar, a student of Bacon and Matta in London. The vibrations of sounds and colours, light, rhythm, space, the colour of sound and the harmony of colours, expression, and the mutual interpenetration of these elements fascinate me and give meaning to my life and my work.
